Seattle Microsoft UC User Group (SMUCUG) Meeting – 5/19

Tweet For those local UC folks, a quick note about the local UC users group. We have had a few names over the years… Pacific NW Exchange User Group, UC Doers, and now we have adopted a more uniform name Seattle Microsoft UC Users Group (SMUCUG). I have been involved in the organization of the group for around five years now and am happy to say that the momentum is increasing. We have some strong leaders with me (Chris Norman from Microsoft) has been key to the success. We are continuing to get top level speakers from the product teams, peer case studies, and have been doing a lot more sharing and collaboration on common problems that we all have. May 19th is the next user group meeting, we’re holding the meeting downtown … Read entire article »

How email archiving makes life easier for administrators and employees

Tweet Email is an important business communications tool. Whether for business needs, to meet compliance or in the case of legal requirements, businesses need to keep a copy of work-related email. Because administrators need to set an email quota so that they do not run out of storage space on the server and performance is not negatively impacted, some employees end up having to either delete emails or save them on PST files – putting the business at risk. This can be prevented simply by implementing an email archiving solution. Why use email archiving software? PST files can become corrupted or unusable for a variety of reasons, and it can be difficult to save or move old emails from one computer to another unless you have implemented email archiving software. … Read entire article »

Exchange 2010: PowerShell Remoting error

Tweet I haven’t posted much in terms of Exchange 2010 articles in a while as usually there is already good guidance on the interwebs about how to fix niche problems. I try not to post the same stuff that you would find elsewhere and there are more and more great resources available from MSFT and other sources (including a few that I have worked on). One issue that is continually problematic is PowerShell remoting. I have run into a lot of powershell remoting issues and have found that there are a lot of other people who have as well. There is a ton of guidance about how to troubleshoot PowerShell remoting problems: Technet – Troubleshooting the Exchange Management Shell Exchange Team – Troubleshooting Exchange 2010 Management Tools startup issues & Resolving WinRM errors and … Read entire article »

Exchange 2007 Migration with Cisco Unity 5.x – Part 1

Tweet One of my customer’s has been using Cisco’s Unity product for some time now (now that we are closer to having Exchange 2007 running there, we are evaluating Exchange 2007′s UM capabilities along with OCS 2007 and finding it may be more cost effective to move off of Cisco in the long term). More about the strategies of the technology later… for now, I’ll talk more about the Cisco Unity modifications required to keep UM working while Exchange is migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007…. Before we go to far, I want to point out that the configuration in question here is a single Forest, Single Domain, all of the Exchange servers are in this domain, two sites (one unity installation per site), and Unity is configured in failover mode. The first … Read entire article »

Entry Level eMail Admin

Tweet I was asked an interesting question today by a helpdesk technician…. I think I am a great helpdesk support tech, but I would really like to make a change and move up the ladder to become an entry level email admin, what should I do? Wow!! The first step here is to recognize where you want to go – and this tech had it nailed!! If you are in this position – this first step is a biggie! After further discussion I found that this person already had identified why they wanted to go into email administration, why they felt they were competent enough, and  what they wanted this to lead to. The technician felt that email was looked at in the company as high priority application (despite it not being a core business application) and … Read entire article »
