The Definition of Running at Ignite 18

Tweet Happy New Year’s Eve!! The video from my Ignite 18 talk is finally posted! Here is the video from the talk I gave earlier this year about The Definition of Running. Yes the book is still on the way out. It is moving slowly at the end here, but expect that it will be out soon enough. In the meantime, I tried to distill all the information into a concise 5 min talk… I’m sure the book is better than the talk but if you wanted to see the talk as well – here it is: The talk itself was fun to deliver and giving it at Town Hall Seattle was a particular treat! Usually Town Hall Seattle attracts big names from Seattle (like the Mayor – oh wait, I opened the Ignite Seattle … Read entire article »

Running

Tweet No this isn’t a post about running… it is a post about writing – well writing about running. I’ve been slow to post here as I get the closer and closer to getting this writing project through to completion. One interesting peice of information I’ll share is that people who run with their spouse only smile 33% of the time – meaning most people that run with their spouse are not smiling! I wonder if they don’t enjoy running or don’t enjoy the company. If you are interested in learning more about the book – sign up at The Definition of Running. Of course if you have anecdotes about running, are interested in reviewing a copy pre or post publishing… let me know! Btw, don’t be suprised if the blog here is suddenly … Read entire article »

Twitter Updates – 09/22/2012

Tweet Running is a passion, a chore, a necessity, and a source or community. Despite all of these things the dictionary says that running is “fast movement: rapid movement on foot, with long strides and both feet momentarily off the ground”. Sounds like skipping or kangaroo jumps to me. Well regardless of what the dictionary thinks I am doing some research into runners and running and am collecting a little bit of data. The end product of the research is still forming, in the interim I would appreciate your insights into what running is by either responding to this 1 minute survey… http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3KJWYKB I promise it is super short – 10 multiple choice questions! Then go on to the most interesting tweets from the week  Is $MSFT pissing off Valve a good move – http://venturebeat.com/2012/09/09/three-interesting-revelations-about-valve-in-nyt-profile/ As … Read entire article »

The Definition of Running (Part 3 of 3)

Tweet Part1, Part2, and all the others are on my Run Your Age blog – definitely should be read in order According to research by a group of researchers at Harvard, a natural running gait consists of one that includes a forefoot or mid foot landing. This landing style is one that naturally absorbs the impact resulting in a body that does not have to deal with the impact. Examining the modern running shoes themselves, it is easy to see a large cushioned heel which promotes an aft foot landing. This aft foot landing allows the shoe to do several things, including align the foot throughout the stroke, reduce or remove pronation, and provide a level of comfort on the ground. These changes to the landing are counter-intuitive to how … Read entire article »

The Definition of Running (Part 2 of 3)

Tweet If you haven’t read The Definition of Running (Part 1 of 3) – I recommend it before reading this post along with the others on my RunYourAge blog… Picking up from where we left off last time, beyond the skeleton changes and the changes to the muscles and tendons as a result of the skeletal changes, there are some interesting aspects of the feet specifically that make what we know as running possible. With so much obvious advancement of the human body, why is it that there remain so many different opinions of what running is and means? Our bodies have evolved into running machines. There is a wealth of modern evidence to support this, look at all of the different types of running and the different distances that we humans go. … Read entire article »

The Definition of Running (Part 1 of 3)

Tweet This series is a cross post from one of my other blogs that is all about running (www.runyourage.com). I am working on getting to running as many miles as I am old – which may mean that I never get there as I get older every year. I think I’ll be able to add miles faster than years though and eventually get there. Anyway – I particularly enjoyed researching and writing this stuff and wanted to offer it to everyone (even if you aren’t a runner)… enjoy (link to original) Running, or some form of running has been around since the dawn of man. It has been the basis of our transportation, the measure that other modes of transportation were initially compared against, and it continues today to be a method … Read entire article »
